It is situated in the ''[comarca](/source/comarca)'' of [Baix Vinalopó](/source/Baix_Vinalop%C3%B3), and lies at the foot of the hill range known locally as [Serra de Crevillent](/source/Serra_de_Crevillent). {{as of|2009}}, it has a total population of 28,609 inhabitants. The terrain is dry, and its main vegetation is composed by [carob tree](/source/carob_tree)s, [almond tree](/source/almond)s, [olive tree](/source/olive_tree)s and ''[esparto](/source/esparto)''. Crevillent is a major producer and exporter of [carpet](/source/carpet)s and [pomegranates](/source/pomegranates). The town was probably settled by [Romans](/source/Ancient_Rome). In 1263, during the period known as ''[Reconquista](/source/Reconquista)'', [James I of Aragon](/source/James_I_of_Aragon) captured the city from the [Moors](/source/Moors) and became a part of the [Kingdom of Valencia](/source/Kingdom_of_Valencia). The most important tourist places of the city is a museum with works of [Mariano Benlliure](/source/Mariano_Benlliure), a Valencian [sculptor](/source/sculpture). Also remarkable is its [Moors and Christians](/source/Moros_i_Cristians) festival.
