**Creswell Bay** is an [Arctic](/source/Arctic) waterway in [Qikiqtaaluk Region](/source/Qikiqtaaluk_Region), [Nunavut](/source/Nunavut), Canada. It is an arm of western [Prince Regent Inlet](/source/Prince_Regent_Inlet) in eastern [Somerset Island](/source/Somerset_Island_(Nunavut)). Its northeastern landmark, Fury Point, is approximately 100 km (62 mi) west of [Baffin Island](/source/Baffin_Island).

While the bay does not have any permanent settlements, the closest is [Resolute](/source/Resolute%2C_Nunavut) about 228 km (142 mi) to the north-northeast,[2] it was an [outpost camp](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Outpost_camp&action=edit&redlink=1) and remains an important site to [Inuit](/source/Inuit).[3]

## Geography

Creswell Bay is large and almost semicircular. Its habitat is characterized by [tundra](/source/Tundra), rivers, streams, mud, saline [sand flats](/source/Mudflat), a freshwater lake, open sea, inlets, coastal marine features, coastal cliffs, and rocky marine shores.

[Stanwell-Fletcher Lake](/source/Stanwell-Fletcher_Lake) is joined to the bay by the Union River; crystalline rocks are notable along the way. The Creswell River also empties into the bay.[4]

The [Devonian](/source/Devonian) period [Peel Sound Formation](/source/Peel_Sound_Formation) outcrops at the bay. The [formation](/source/Geological_formation) consists of sandstone, grit, and conglomerate which is predominantly [limestone](/source/Limestone).[5]

## Fauna

[Narwhals](/source/Narwhal) in the bay

The bay is a Canadian [Important Bird Area](/source/Important_Bird_Area) (#NU062). Notable bird species include [grey plover](/source/Grey_plover), [greater snow goose](/source/Snow_goose), [king eider](/source/King_eider), [long-tailed duck](/source/Long-tailed_duck), [red phalarope](/source/Red_phalarope), [sanderling](/source/Sanderling), and [white-rumped sandpiper](/source/White-rumped_sandpiper). [Arctic char](/source/Arctic_char) enter the bay in the late summer and swim up the Union River to [Stanwell-Fletcher Lake](/source/Stanwell-Fletcher_Lake), where they over-winter. The large numbers of char attract [beluga whales](/source/Beluga_whale) and [narwhals](/source/Narwhal) which feed on them.
