## Life and career

Craig Bauer was born and raised in [Cleveland](/source/Cleveland), Ohio, where he worked through the ranks of the studios there before migrating to [Chicago](/source/Chicago), Illinois in the early 1990s to open his own recording studio.[4] Bauer additionally studied [classical piano](/source/Classical_piano) and [music education](/source/Music_Education) at [Ohio State University](/source/Ohio_State_University).[1][6]

In 1993, Bauer opened Hinge Studios in Chicago, Illinois. Many of his first clients were jazz artists, including, [Dave Koz](/source/Dave_Koz), [Brian Culbertson](/source/Brian_Culbertson), [Steve Cole](/source/Steve_Cole) and [Peter White](/source/Peter_White_(musician)).[2]

By 1997, Bauer began working with a young rap group dubbed "the Go Getters", which included a 20 year-old [Kanye West](/source/Kanye_West).[2] Several of the demos that West recorded at Hinge Studios were built into tracks on the album *[The College Dropout](/source/The_College_Dropout)*. Bauer later mixed "[Heard 'Em Say](/source/Heard_'Em_Say)", "Roses", "Bring Me Down", "Addiction" and "Late" on West's [*Late Registration*](/source/Late_Registration), which was nominated for [Album of the Year](/source/Grammy_Award_for_Album_of_the_Year) at the [48th Annual Grammy Awards](/source/48th_Annual_Grammy_Awards). He also mixed on West’s follow-up album [*Graduation*](/source/Graduation_(album)), which was nominated again for Album of the Year at the [50th Annual Grammy Awards](/source/50th_Annual_Grammy_Awards).[4]

Craig Bauer mixed [Lupe Fiasco](/source/Lupe_Fiasco)'s debut studio album *[Lupe Fiasco's Food & Liquor](/source/Lupe_Fiasco's_Food_%26_Liquor)* in 2006, which received four Grammy Award nominations at the [49th Grammy Awards](/source/49th_Grammy_Awards), including [Best Rap Album](/source/Grammy_Award_for_Best_Rap_Album). In 2007, he mixed the majority of Fiasco's second album, *[Lupe Fiasco's The Cool](/source/Lupe_Fiasco's_The_Cool)*, including the single "[Superstar](/source/Superstar_(Lupe_Fiasco_song))", which peaked at #10 on the [*Billboard* Hot 100](/source/Billboard_Hot_100). *The Cool* was nominated in four categories at the [51st Grammy Awards](/source/51st_Grammy_Awards).[7][8]

In 2008, Bauer won his first Grammy for mixing the [Clark Sisters](/source/The_Clark_Sisters) album *[Live – One Last Time](/source/Live_%E2%80%93_One_Last_Time)* at the [50th Annual Grammy Awards](/source/50th_Annual_Grammy_Awards).[2]
