**Cowpen Marsh** ([grid reference](/source/Ordnance_Survey_National_Grid) [NZ500529](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?pagename=Cowpen_Marsh&params=54.868385_N_1.222456_W_region:GB_scale:25000)) is a 116.8 [hectare](/source/Hectare) [biological Site of Special Scientific Interest](/source/Biological_Site_of_Special_Scientific_Interest) in [County Durham](/source/County_Durham), [England](/source/England), [notified](/source/SSSI_notification) in 1966. SSSIs are designated by [Natural England](/source/Natural_England), formally [English Nature](/source/English_Nature), which uses the [1974–1996 county system](/source/Metropolitan_and_non-metropolitan_counties_of_England). This means there is no grouping of SSSIs by [Stockton-on-Tees](/source/Stockton-on-Tees_(borough)) unitary authority, or County Durham which is the relevant [ceremonial county](/source/Ceremonial_counties_of_England) . As such Cowpen Marsh is one of 18 SSSIs in the [Cleveland area of search](/source/List_of_Sites_of_Special_Scientific_Interest_in_Cleveland).[1]
