== Geography ==
The river rises in the [Grampian Mountains](/source/Grampian_Mountains_(Scotland)) in [Kincardineshire](/source/Kincardineshire), and discharges to the [North Sea](/source/North_Sea) in the northern part of [Stonehaven](/source/Stonehaven),<ref>United Kingdom Ordnance Survey Map Landranger 45, Stonehaven and Banchory, 1:50,000 scale, 2004</ref> south of the ruined [Cowie Castle](/source/Cowie_Castle). Tributaries of the Cowie Water include the [Burn of Monboys](/source/Burn_of_Monboys), which drains the area to the north, in which the archaeological site [Raedykes](/source/Raedykes) [Roman Camp](/source/Roman_Camp) is situated; and [Cowton Burn](/source/Cowton_Burn).

Notable features in this vicinity include [Dunnottar Castle](/source/Dunnottar_Castle), [Fetteresso Castle](/source/Fetteresso_Castle) and [Muchalls Castle](/source/Muchalls_Castle).  Other nearby [coast](/source/coast)al waterways discharging to the North Sea include [Burn of Muchalls](/source/Burn_of_Muchalls) to the north and [Carron Water](/source/Carron_Water%2C_Aberdeenshire) to the south.

July values for [pH](/source/pH) have been measured at 8.2 or slightly [alkaline](/source/alkaline)  July water temperatures are about 11.9 degrees Celsius and [electrical conductivity](/source/electrical_conductivity) at [Cowie Bridge](/source/Cowie_Bridge) near the mouth has been measured at a relatively low value of .07 micro-Siemens per meter.  [Turbidity](/source/Turbidity) measured exactly 24 hours after a moderate rainfall of one centimeter was 14 JTU in a July circumstance.
