The '''Coweeman River''' is a [tributary](/source/tributary) of the [Cowlitz River](/source/Cowlitz_River), in the South West corner of the [U.S. state](/source/U.S._state) of [Washington](/source/Washington_(state)). Its name comes from the [Cowlitz](/source/Cowlitz_language) word ko-wee-na, meaning "short one", referring to a short Indian who once lived along the river.<ref name="gnis"/>

==Course==
The Coweeman River originates in Coweeman Lake and flows west for {{convert|36|mi|km}} to join the Cowlitz River near the confluence of the Cowlitz and [Columbia River](/source/Columbia_River) at [Kelso](/source/Kelso%2C_Washington).<ref name="topo map"/> Just below the mouth of its first named tributary, Butler Creek, the river drops over Washboard Falls.<ref name="topo map"/>
