Using powers created by the [Police Act 1964](/source/Police_Act_1964), the then [Home Secretary](/source/Home_Secretary) decided in 1966 to merge the city force with that of the county, the [Warwickshire Police](/source/Warwickshire_Police) as the [Warwickshire and Coventry Constabulary](/source/Warwickshire_and_Coventry_Constabulary).<ref name="WMPM" /> This took effect in 1969.<ref name="WMPM" /> From 1 April 1974, Coventry's police were transferred to the newly formed [West Midlands Police](/source/West_Midlands_Police).<ref name="WMPM" />
