Courroux is first mentioned in 1146 under its German name as '' Lütoltesdorf''.  The French name was first mentioned in 1148 as ''Corolt''.<ref name=HDS/>

==Geography==

Courroux has an area of {{Swiss area|6709|mi=on}}.{{Swiss area data|6709|QUELLE}}  Of this area, {{convert|10.52|km2|mi2|abbr=on}} or 53.3% is used for agricultural purposes, while {{convert|7.58|km2|mi2|abbr=on}} or 38.4% is forested. Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 4.8% and transportation infrastructure made up 1.7%.  Out of the forested land, 36.3% of the total land area is heavily forested and 2.1% is covered with orchards or small clusters of trees.  Of the agricultural land, 33.7% is used for growing crops and  10.4% is pastures and 8.6% is used for alpine pastures.  All the water in the municipality is flowing water.<ref name=BFS_land/>

The municipality is located in the Delémont district, three kilometers southeast of the city of [Delémont](/source/Del%C3%A9mont) and east of the [confluence](/source/confluence) of the Scheulte and [Birs](/source/Birs) rivers.  North of the village is the forested Bambois mountain with the peak Roc de Courroux ({{convert|855|m|ft|sp=us|disp=x| [|]}}) named after the village.

In 2011 the municipalities of [Corban](/source/Corban%2C_Switzerland), [Courchapoix](/source/Courchapoix), Courroux, [Mervelier](/source/Mervelier), [Montsevelier](/source/Montsevelier), [Vermes](/source/Vermes%2C_Switzerland) and [Vicques](/source/Vicques%2C_Switzerland) were considering a merger into the new municipality of [Val Terbi](/source/Val_Terbi). During the 2009-10 school year, there were a total of 327 students attending 17 classes in Courroux. This rate is lower than average, at only 68.7% of the rate in the district and 61.9% of the average rate in the entire country.  During the same period, the rate of drug crimes was 0.6 per thousand residents, which is only 19.4% of the rate in the district, 15.8% of the rate in the canton and is only 6.1% of the national rate.  The rate of violations of immigration, visa and work permit laws was 1.9 per thousand residents.
