The '''County of [Metz](/source/Metz)''' originated from the [frankish](/source/Franks) [Metzgau](/source/Metzgau). In the second half of the 9th century it went to the [Gerhardiner](/source/Gerhardiner) [(de)](/source/%3Ade%3AMatfriede), which held at the same time the [County of Paris](/source/County_of_Paris).

Over the Gerhardiner went the County—perhaps even in male lineage—to the [Matfriede](/source/Matfriede), which furthermore in 1047 received the title of Duke in [Lorraine](/source/Lorraine_(duchy)), namely [Gerard IV, Duke of Alsace](/source/Gerard%2C_Duke_of_Lorraine) (c. 1030 – 1070), [Seigneur](/source/Fiefdom) of [Châtenois](/source/Ch%C3%A2tenois%2C_Vosges) (see also [House of Châtenois](/source/House_of_Ch%C3%A2tenois)).

The County of Metz was eventually merged into the [Bishopric of Metz](/source/Prince-Bishopric_of_Metz).

From 985 the city of Metz was a [Free Imperial City](/source/Free_Imperial_City) of the German [Holy Roman Empire](/source/Holy_Roman_Empire).<ref>{{cite book |title=The Story of Alsace&Lorraine, and how They Were Lost by Germany, Etc |date=1871 |publisher=J.
