The '''Council of Philippopolis''' in 343, 344, or 347 was a result of [Arian](/source/Arianism) bishops from the [Eastern Roman Empire](/source/Eastern_Roman_Empire) leaving the [Council of Sardica](/source/Council_of_Sardica) to form their own counter council. In [Philippopolis](/source/Philippopolis_(Thrace)) (today's Plovdiv), they [anathemized](/source/Anathema) the term ''[homoousios](/source/homoousios)'', in effect [excommunicating](/source/Excommunication) [Pope Julius I](/source/Pope_Julius_I) as well as their rivals at the Council in [Sardica](/source/Sardica) (today's Sofia), and introduced the term [Anomoian](/source/Anomoeanism) and as a result, the Arian controversy was perpetuated, rather than resolved, as was the original intention of the [Roman emperor](/source/Roman_emperor)s [Constans](/source/Constans) and [Constantius](/source/Constantius_II).<ref>Socrates Scholasticus, ''Church History'', book 2, chapter 20.</ref>
