# Cosmolabe Rock

**Cosmolabe Rock** (Bulgarian: скала Космолабия, skɐˈla kosmoˈlabija) is the rock off the NW coast of northwest coast of [Nelson Island](/source/Nelson_Island_(South_Shetland_Islands)) in the [South Shetland Islands](/source/South_Shetland_Islands), [Antarctica](/source/Antarctica) extending 120 m in southeast–northwest direction and 50 m wide. Its surface area is 0.23 ha. The vicinity was visited by early 19th century [sealers](/source/Seal_hunting).[1]

The feature is named after the [cosmolabe](/source/Cosmolabe), an instrument created by the French inventor and mathematician [Jacques Besson](/source/Jacques_Besson) (ca 1540–1573) to be used for navigation, surveying and cartography; in association with other names in the area deriving from the early development or use of [geodetic](/source/Geodesy) instruments and methods.

## Location

Cosmolabe Rock is located at [62°14′51.2″S 59°09′21.6″W](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?params=62_14_51.2_S_59_09_21.6_W),[2] which is 860 m northwest of [Retamales Point](/source/Retamales_Point), 2.7 km northeast of [Smilets](/source/Smilets) Point and 1.43 km southwest of [Withem Island](/source/Withem_Island). British mapping in 1968.
