Canonical URL: https://mediated.wiki/source/Cosmo_Crawley > Markdown URL: https://mediated.wiki/source/Cosmo_Crawley.md > Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosmo_Crawley > Source revision: 1353961526 > License: Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/) **Cosmo Stafford Crawley** (27 May 1904 – 10 February 1989) was an English first-class [cricketer](/source/Cricket), [rackets](/source/Rackets_(sport)) and [real tennis](/source/Real_tennis) player. ## Early life and cricket Crawley was the eldest son of [Arthur Stafford Crawley](/source/Arthur_Stafford_Crawley), then a [curate](/source/Curate) at [St Luke's, Chelsea](/source/St_Luke's,_Chelsea).[1] He was educated at [Harrow School](/source/Harrow_School), where he played for the school cricket team against [Eton](/source/Eton_College) and [Winchester](/source/Winchester_College), with him heading the [averages](/source/Batting_average_(cricket)) in 1922.[2] From there, he matriculated to [Magdalen College, Oxford](/source/Magdalen_College,_Oxford).[3] He played one [first-class cricket](/source/First-class_cricket) match for [Hampshire](/source/Hampshire_County_Cricket_Club) *against* [Oxford University](/source/Oxford_University_Cricket_Club) at [Oxford](/source/University_Parks#Cricket_ground) in 1923.[4] The following season, he played once *for* Oxford University against [Middlesex](/source/Middlesex_County_Cricket_Club), in addition to playing for the [Free Foresters](/source/Free_Foresters_Cricket_Club) *against* Oxford University.[4] In 1925, he made a further two appearance for Oxford University against [Leicestershire](/source/Leicestershire_County_Cricket_Club).[4] He would later make two further first-class appearances, playing for the [Harlequins](/source/Harlequins_Cricket_Club) in 1927, and for Middlesex in 1929, with Oxford University the opponents in both matches; all six of his first-class appearances thus came either for or against Oxford University.[4] In his six matches at first-class level, Crawley scored 243 runs at an [average](/source/Batting_average_(cricket)) of 22.09, with one half century.[5] ## Rackets and real tennis Crawley played [rackets](/source/Rackets_(sport)) while at Harrow School, and both rackets and [real tennis](/source/Real_tennis) while studying at Oxford. He won the British amateur rackets doubles championship in 1936 and 1937 with J. C. F. Simpson, and in 1939 and 1946 with [John Pawle](/source/John_Pawle).[6] He and Pawle also won the 1939 amateur real tennis doubles, beating the 3rd and 4th [Lord Aberdares](/source/Baron_Aberdare), then aged 54 and 20, in the final.[7] He also captained the English rackets team against the United States in 1947, in addition to winning the Canadian Championship doubles with Pawle.[8] Writing in *[The Times](/source/The_Times)* after Crawley's death, [Alec Douglas-Home](/source/Alec_Douglas-Home) noted that "In the doubles he was master of all the arts of this fastest of ball-games".[8] ## Later life and death Crawley joined the insurance broking firm of C.T. Bowring & Co. in 1925 and was a director 1934–67 and a consultant to the firm 1967–73. He was an underwriting member of [Lloyd's](/source/Lloyd's).[9] At the outbreak of the [Second World War](/source/Second_World_War), he was given an emergency [commission](/source/Commissioned_officer) as a [second lieutenant](/source/Second_lieutenant#United_Kingdom_and_other_Commonwealth_countries) in the [Coldstream Guards](/source/Coldstream_Guards),[10] serving until 1945. Crawley died at [Westminster](/source/Westminster) in February 1989. His brother, [Aidan](/source/Aidan_Crawley), was a first-class cricketer and politician.[2] His cousin, [Charles Crawley](/source/Charles_Crawley), was also a first-class cricketer. ## References 1.
