# Cornwell Corner

**Cornwell Corner** ([80°13′S 158°59′E](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?params=80_13_S_158_59_E)) is an angular rock bluff, about 800 metres (2,600 ft) high, at the west end of [Horney Bluff](/source/Horney_Bluff) and the terminus of [Merrick Glacier](/source/Merrick_Glacier), where the glacial flow is forced east at an acute angle upon entering [Byrd Glacier](/source/Byrd_Glacier). It was named by the [Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names](/source/Advisory_Committee_on_Antarctic_Names), in association with Byrd Glacier, after Captain [Delbert S. Cornwell](/source/Delbert_S._Cornwell), [U.S. Navy](/source/U.S._Navy), who was captain of the aircraft carrier [USS *Philippine Sea*](/source/USS_Philippine_Sea_(CV-47)) in [U.S. Navy Operation Highjump](/source/U.S._Navy_Operation_Highjump), 1946–47, led by [Admiral Byrd](/source/Admiral_Byrd). The *Philippine Sea* carried six twin-engine [Douglas R4D](/source/Douglas_R4D) aircraft, which took off from the carrier deck and flew about 700 miles (1,100 km) to [Little America](/source/Little_America_(exploration_base)) base, [Ross Ice Shelf](/source/Ross_Ice_Shelf), from where exploratory and photographic flights were made.
