Mays earned All City, All Area and All State honors as a Senior. Mays capped off his senior year with the 2001 Gatorade Player of The Year honors for Illinois.

Mays was first signed as an [undrafted free agent](/source/undrafted_free_agent_(football)) out of the [University of Notre Dame](/source/University_of_Notre_Dame) after the [2006 NFL draft](/source/2006_NFL_draft). He started the [2006](/source/2006_in_sports) season as a member of the [New England Patriots](/source/New_England_Patriots) [practice squad](/source/practice_squad), but was later signed to the active roster. He was cut by the Patriots on October 1, 2007.
