The '''Core Sound''' is a [sound](/source/sound_(geography)) in eastern [North Carolina](/source/North_Carolina) located between the mainland of [Carteret County](/source/Carteret_County%2C_North_Carolina) and [Core Banks](/source/Core_Banks), part of the [Outer Banks](/source/Outer_Banks) of North Carolina.  It lies between the large [Pamlico Sound](/source/Pamlico_Sound) to the northeast and the smaller [Back Sound](/source/Back_Sound) to the west.  Several shifting inlets connect the sound to the [Atlantic Ocean](/source/Atlantic_Ocean).

Settlements on the mainland side of the sound include [Marshallberg](/source/Marshallberg%2C_North_Carolina), [Davis](/source/Davis%2C_North_Carolina), [Sea Level](/source/Sea_Level%2C_North_Carolina), and [Atlantic](/source/Atlantic%2C_North_Carolina).  There are no permanent settlements on Core Banks.
