'''Corcoran Hall''' is an academic building on the campus of [George Washington University](/source/George_Washington_University) in [Washington, D.C.](/source/Washington%2C_D.C.) It was listed on the District of Columbia Inventory of Historic Sites in 1987 and the [National Register of Historic Places](/source/National_Register_of_Historic_Places) in 1991.

==History==
Corcoran Hall was the first building built on the university's [Foggy Bottom](/source/Foggy_Bottom) campus.<ref name= gwu>{{cite web|url= http://encyclopedia.gwu.edu/gwencyclopedia/index.php?title=Corcoran_Hall |title= Corcoran Hall |publisher= George Washington University |access-date=2012-03-21|last=|first=}}</ref> The building was designed by architects [Albert L. Harris](/source/Albert_L._Harris) and [Arthur B. Heaton](/source/Arthur_B._Heaton) in the [Colonial Revival](/source/Colonial_Revival_architecture) style. It was dedicated on October 28, 1924, and named after [William Wilson Corcoran](/source/William_Wilson_Corcoran), who was President of the Trustees and benefactor of the university. Nuclear physicist [George Gamow](/source/George_Gamow) both taught and did research in the building from 1934 to 1956. The [bazooka](/source/bazooka) was developed in the basement during World War II. The physics department is now housed in the building.

==Architecture==
The Colonial Revival building is a four-story structure with a concrete and steel frame. The exterior is covered in red brick laid in [Flemish bond](/source/Flemish_bond) and trimmed in [limestone](/source/limestone). The rectangular structure is {{convert|136|ft|m|0}} wide and {{convert|55|ft|m|0}} deep.<ref name= gwu/> The main entrance to the building is in the center of the main [facade](/source/facade) and is flanked by four segmental arched windows on each side. The upper stories are similarly symmetrical with rectangular windows. A simple [cornice](/source/cornice) frames the top of the building. A [cupola](/source/cupola) tops the structure.
