'''Coponius''' was the first Roman governor ([prefect](/source/Praefectus)<ref>{{Cite book |first=H.H. |last=Ben-Sasson |title=A History of the Jewish People |publisher=Harvard University Press |date=1976 |isbn=0-674-39731-2 |page=246 |quote=At first the governor of Judea held the title of prefect; only after Herod Agrippa's death (in A.D. 44) did [procurator](/source/Procurator_(ancient_Rome)) become the official designation.}}</ref>) of [Judaea province](/source/Judea_(Roman_province)) (from 6 CE to 9 CE).

He was, like the prefects who succeeded him, an [eques](/source/Equites), and "had the power of life and death".<ref name="BJ">{{cite book| author=[Josephus](/source/Josephus) |title=Bellum Judaicum |title-link=The Jewish War |at=ii. 8, § 1}}</ref><ref>{{cite book| author=Josephus |title=Antiquities of the Jews |title-link=Antiquities of the Jews |at=xviii. 1, § 1}}</ref> During his administration the revolt of [Judas the Galilean](/source/Judas_the_Galilean) occurred,<ref name="BJ"/> the cause of which was not so much the personality of Coponius as the introduction of Roman soldiers. Owing to the reconstruction of the [province of Judea](/source/province_of_Judea) then in progress, the [census](/source/Census_of_Quirinius) was being taken by [Quirinius](/source/Quirinius), [Roman legate](/source/Roman_legate) of [Syria](/source/Roman_Syria), which was a further cause of offence.

In 9, Coponius was recalled to Rome, and replaced by [Marcus Ambivulus](/source/Marcus_Ambivulus).<ref>{{cite book| author=Josephus |title=Antiquities of the Jews |title-link=Antiquities of the Jews |at=xviii. 2, § 2}}</ref>
