The '''Cookson Hills''' are in eastern [Oklahoma](/source/Oklahoma). They are an extension of the [Boston Mountains](/source/Boston_Mountains) of [Arkansas](/source/Arkansas) to the east and the southwestern margin of the [Ozark Plateau](/source/Ozark_Plateau). They lie generally between [Stilwell](/source/Stilwell%2C_Oklahoma), [Sallisaw](/source/Sallisaw%2C_Oklahoma) and [Tahlequah](/source/Tahlequah%2C_Oklahoma). ==Geography==

The region is a rugged [dissected plateau](/source/dissected_plateau) with numerous peaks and ridges up to {{convert|1,500|ft|m}} above sea level. The Cooksons are drained by tributaries of the [Illinois River (Arkansas)](/source/Illinois_River_(Arkansas)). They are heavily wooded, predominantly [oak](/source/oak), with patches of [black walnut](/source/black_walnut) and [hickory](/source/hickory) trees.<ref name="EOHC-CooksonHills"/>  The [J. T. Nickel Family Nature and Wildlife Preserve](/source/J._T._Nickel_Family_Nature_and_Wildlife_Preserve) is located in the Cookson Hills.  It is the largest nature preserve in the region.
