# Cooee Bay

**Cooee Bay** is a coastal [locality](/source/Suburbs_and_localities_(Australia)) in the [Livingstone Shire](/source/Livingstone_Shire), [Queensland](/source/Queensland), Australia.[1] In the , Cooee Bay had a population of 942 people.[2]

## Geography

Cooee Bay is bounded to the east by the [Coral Sea](/source/Coral_Sea). It is centrally located on the [Capricorn Coast](/source/Capricorn_Coast), two kilometres south of [Yeppoon](/source/Yeppoon), and 17 kilometres (11 mi) north of [Emu Park](/source/Emu_Park).[3]

Like its neighbouring suburb [Taranganba](/source/Taranganba), Cooee Bay is separated from Yeppoon by [Ross Creek](/source/Ross_Creek_Yeppoon), a popular fishing location.[3]

Cooee Bay has the following headlands (from north to south):

- Wreck Point ([23.144°S 150.7643°E](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?params=-23.1440_150.7643&title=Wreck%20Point))[4][7]

These headlands create a number of small bays (from north to south):

- Yeppoon Inlet at the mouth of Ross Creek ([23.1362°S 150.7515°E](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?params=-23.1362_150.7515&title=Yeppoon%20Inlet))[8]
- Fishermans Bay ([23.1375°S 150.7533°E](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?params=-23.1375_150.7533&title=Fishermans%20Bay)) south of the mount of Ross Creek[9]
- Brumms Cove ([23.1388°S 150.7583°E](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?params=-23.1388_150.7583&title=Brumms%20Cove)) between Wave Point and Keppel Outlook[10]
- Cooee Bay ([23.1409°S 150.7605°E](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?params=-23.1409_150.7605&title=Cooee%20Bay)) south of Keppel Outlook[11]

Matthew Flinders Drive is an alternative tourist deviation from the [Scenic Highway](/source/Scenic_Highway_(Queensland)), which travels up to Wreck Point. From the lookout, the visitor can enjoy views to [Byfield](/source/Byfield,_Queensland), [Great Keppel Island](/source/Great_Keppel_Island), and [Rosslyn](/source/Rosslyn,_Queensland).[3]

Offshore to the east is the locality of [The Keppels](/source/The_Keppels,_Queensland) which contain the Great Keppel Islands and a number of other islands.[12]

## History

Cooee Bay Post Office opened on 18 September 1961 by Don and Edna Schabe who had previously owned the Cooee Bay General Store. There is a memorial to Don Schabe in the park for his contribution to the Cooee Bay Progress Association. Prior to the opening of the post office, a [receiving office](/source/Receiving_office) had been open from 1894. The post office closed in 1977.[13]

During [World War 2](/source/World_War_II), Cooee Bay was heavily occupied by the [US Army](/source/US_Army).[14]

Prior to [local government amalgamations](/source/Local_government_areas_of_Queensland) in 2008, the Capricorn Coast was administered by [Livingstone Shire Council](/source/Livingstone_Shire_Council). From 2008 to 2013 it was administered by Rockhampton Region. From 1 January 2014, the Shire of Livingstone was restored and now administers Cooee Bay.

There are no schools in Cooee Bay. The nearest government primary school is [Taranganba State School](/source/Taranganba_State_School) in neighbouring [Taranganba](/source/Taranganba) to the south. The nearest government secondary school is [Yeppoon State High School](/source/Yeppoon_State_High_School) in neighbouring [Yeppoon](/source/Yeppoon) to the north-west.
