{{Short description|Diesel-electric locomotive subsystem which integrates engine functional controls}}thumb|AAR control stand on an EMD DDA40X; Other EMD models are similar.

A '''control stand''' is a [diesel-electric locomotive](/source/Diesel-electric_locomotive) subsystem which integrates engine functional controls and brake functional controls,<ref>{{cite web| url=http://www.blet-ns.com/documents/agreements/utu/2006%20LET%20complete%20Workbook.pdf| title=Locomotive Engineer Training Handbook| date=February 2006| author=Norfolk Southern Railroad| accessdate=August 2, 2015}}</ref> whereby all functional controls are "at hand" (within reach of the locomotive engineer from their customary seating position, facing forward at all times).<ref>{{cite web| url=http://www.railway-technical.com/diesel.shtml| title=Diesel Locomotive Technology| website=Railway Technical Web Pages| accessdate=August 2, 2015| archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150901062917/http://www.railway-technical.com/diesel.shtml| archive-date=September 1, 2015| url-status=dead}}</ref> The control stand can be on either the left or right hand side of the cab, depending on region.

Normally, a control stand is oriented in the direction labeled "F" (front of the locomotive). Although front is usually the "[short hood](/source/short_hood)," a seldom-used alternate designates the "[long hood](/source/long_hood)" as front, such as on the [Victorian Railways X class](/source/Victorian_Railways_X_class_(diesel)). Where operations in both directions are required, two control stands ("[dual control stand](/source/dual_control_stand)s") may be provided.<ref>{{cite web| url=http://www.intlrailsafety.com/vancouver/pdf/irsc13-95.pdf| title=The Future North American Locomotive Cab| first=Jeffrey| last=Moller| publisher=Association of American Railroads| date=October 2013| accessdate=August 2, 2015| archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150924035630/http://www.intlrailsafety.com/vancouver/pdf/irsc13-95.pdf| archive-date=September 24, 2015| url-status=dead}}</ref>

The early control stands were designed to [Association of American Railroads](/source/Association_of_American_Railroads) (AAR) standards. The traditional AAR control stand is still preferred by some railroads. Current control stands may employ multiple displays and electronic actuation of operational controls from an all-electronic desktop.<ref>{{cite book| url=https://books.google.com/books?id=8y3_xqbY0gYC&q=locomotive+control+stand&pg=PA91| title=Train Accident Reconstruction and FELA and Railroad Litigation| first1=James R.| last1=Loumiet| first2=William G.| last2=Jungbauer| edition=fourth| publisher=Lawyers & Judges Publishing Company| location=Tucson, AZ| year=2005| isbn=978-1-930056-93-0| page=91}}</ref><ref>{{cite web| url=http://www.csx.com/index.cfm/about-csx/company-overview/railroad-dictionary/?i=I| title=Railroad Dictionary| author=CSX Transportation| accessdate=August 2, 2015| archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150801224321/http://www.csx.com/index.cfm/about-csx/company-overview/railroad-dictionary/?i=I| archive-date=August 1, 2015| url-status=dead}}</ref><ref>{{cite web| url=http://proceedings.asmedigitalcollection.asme.org/proceeding.aspx?articleid=1721899| title=ASME Proceedings, Rail Transportation Division: Next Generation Locomotive Cab| first1=Amanda| last1=DiFiore| first2=Abdullatif| last2=Zaouk| first3=S.
