'''''Conservatives without Conscience''''' is a book written by [John Dean](/source/John_Dean), who served as [White House Counsel](/source/White_House_Counsel) under [U.S. President](/source/President_of_the_United_States) [Richard Nixon](/source/Richard_Nixon) and then helped to break the [Watergate scandal](/source/Watergate_scandal) with his testimony before the [United States Senate](/source/United_States_Senate). The book analyzes the evolution of the [Republican Party](/source/Republican_Party_(United_States)), and the different forms of [conservatism](/source/conservatism), largely in terms of [authoritarian personality](/source/authoritarian_personality). It was published in 2006 by [Viking Press](/source/Viking_Press).

The book makes extensive use of the research into [right-wing authoritarianism](/source/right-wing_authoritarianism) of [University of Manitoba](/source/University_of_Manitoba) professor [Bob Altemeyer](/source/Bob_Altemeyer). The title is a play on ''[The Conscience of a Conservative](/source/The_Conscience_of_a_Conservative)'', a seminal book attributed to the Republican nominee in the [1964 presidential campaign](/source/1964_United_States_presidential_election), U.S. Senator [Barry Goldwater](/source/Barry_Goldwater), but ghostwritten by [L. Brent Bozell Jr.](/source/L._Brent_Bozell_Jr.) Dean claims{{citation needed|date=October 2015}} that he and Goldwater had planned to write such a book in the 1980s in response to their disaffection with the [Religious Right](/source/Christian_right).
