'''Connaught Street''' is a street in [Central London](/source/Central_London).<ref>''The London Encyclopaedia'' p.49</ref> Located in the [City of Westminster](/source/City_of_Westminster), it is part of the [Tyburnia](/source/Tyburnia) area of [Paddington](/source/Paddington) north of [Hyde Park](/source/Hyde_Park%2C_London). It runs west to east from [Hyde Park Square](/source/Hyde_Park_Square) to the [Edgware Road](/source/Edgware_Road). It continues eastwards becoming Upper Berkeley Street in [Marylebone](/source/Marylebone). The street contains a mixture of commercial and residential properties, forming part of [Connaught Village](/source/Connaught_Village). [Connaught Square](/source/Connaught_Square) and [Albion Street](/source/Albion_Street%2C_London) are located on its southern side. The Duke of Kendal public house sits at the junction between Connaught Street and Kendal Street.

It is located close to the historic [Tyburn](/source/Tyburn), a site of public executions until the eighteenth century on the outskirts of London. The growing population of the capital led [Samuel Pepys Cockerell](/source/Samuel_Pepys_Cockerell) to lay out an ambitious scheme for redeveloping the area as up-market residential district. Formally part of the [Bishop of London](/source/Bishop_of_London)'s estate, the new plans were amended by [George Gutch](/source/George_Gutch) after Cockerell's death. Work began on Connaught Street and Square in the 1820s, and the first buildings were completed by 1828.<ref>Cherry & Pevsner p.687</ref>

It was originally known as '''Upper Berkeley Street West'''.<ref>{{cite web | url=https://www.british-history.ac.uk/vch/middx/vol9/pp190-198 | title=Paddington: Tyburnia | British History Online }}</ref> The name was later changed in 1879 to match nearby Connaught Square, which takes its name from the subsidiary [Earl of Connaught](/source/Earl_of_Connaught) title of the [Duke of Gloucester](/source/Prince_William_Frederick%2C_Duke_of_Gloucester_and_Edinburgh), the nephew of [George III](/source/George_III).<ref>Bebbington p.96
</ref> Much of the street is now [Grade II listed](/source/Grade_II_listed) featuring the original [Regency architecture](/source/Regency_architecture).<ref>{{cite web | url=https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1291179 | title=61-65, CONNAUGHT STREET W2, non Civil Parish - 1291179 | Historic England }}</ref><ref>{{cite web | url=https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1356951?section=official-list-entry | title=40-48, CONNAUGHT STREET W2, non Civil Parish - 1356951 | Historic England }}</ref><ref>{{cite web | url=https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1220015?section=official-list-entry | title=7-57, CONNAUGHT STREET W2, non Civil Parish - 1220015 | Historic England }}</ref>
