# Conn McCall

**Hugh Conn McCall** (29 March 1940 – 7 June 2002), usually known by his middle name, was an Irish [cricketer](/source/Cricketer). A right-handed [batsman](/source/Batsman) and [left-arm orthodox spin](/source/Left-arm_orthodox_spin) [bowler](/source/Bowler_(cricket)),[1] he played 15 times for the [Ireland cricket team](/source/Ireland_cricket_team) in the 1960s[2][3] including seven [first-class matches](/source/First-class_cricket).[4] His son [Mark](/source/Mark_McCall) played [rugby union](/source/Rugby_union) for [Ireland](/source/Ireland_national_rugby_union_team).[5]

## Cricket career

Conn McCall was scheduled to make his debut for Ireland in their annual match against [Scotland](/source/Scotland_national_cricket_team) in 1964, but the match was abandoned without a ball being bowled. He finally made his debut a few days later, playing against the [MCC](/source/Marylebone_Cricket_Club)[5] in a first-class match.[4] His first match in 1965 was also against the MCC, at [Lord's](/source/Lord's), and he also played against [New Zealand](/source/New_Zealand_national_cricket_team), Scotland and [Hampshire](/source/Hampshire_County_Cricket_Club) that year.[2]

He played three times in 1966, against Scotland, the MCC and [Worcestershire](/source/Worcestershire_County_Cricket_Club), and four times in 1967, including a match against [India](/source/India_national_cricket_team). His final year in the Irish side was in 1968, playing twice against [Australia](/source/Australia_national_cricket_team) before finishing his career as it should have started, playing against Scotland[2] in a first-class match.[4] He later served as an Irish selector in the early 1980s and as president of the [Irish Cricket Union](/source/Irish_Cricket_Union) in 1992.[5]

### Statistics

In all matches for Ireland, he scored 541 [runs](/source/Run_(cricket)) at an [average](/source/Batting_average_(cricket)) of 20.04, with a top score of 81 against the MCC in his debut match, one of three half-[century](/source/Century_(cricket)) for Ireland. He bowled just one delivery,[2] conceding the winning single against New Zealand in 1965.[5]
