Conan Patrick Nolan is the political reporter for KNBC-TV in Los Angeles.<ref>KNBC Staff Biography: Conan Nolan.</ref>, NBC-Universal's flagship station for the western [United States](/source/United_States). He is also the host of the station's ''News Conference'' program, one of the nation's longest running local political/public affairs shows. Established in 1966 by [Tom Brokaw](/source/Tom_Brokaw) and [Bob Abernethy](/source/Bob_Abernethy), ''News Conference'' normally broadcasts Sunday mornings following ''[Meet the Press](/source/Meet_the_Press)'' in the Los Angeles market. Previous hosts include [Warren Olney IV](/source/Warren_Olney_IV), [Linda Douglass](/source/Linda_Douglass), and [Jess Marlow](/source/Jess_Marlow).
 
== Early life and education ==

Nolan is from [San Luis Obispo, California](/source/San_Luis_Obispo%2C_California). His father Thomas F. Nolan, a former U.S. diplomat, was an unsuccessful candidate for the [California State Senate](/source/California_State_Senate) in 1960. His father later taught political science at [Cal Poly San Luis Obispo](/source/Cal_Poly_San_Luis_Obispo). His mother raised five children.

Nolan attended [San Luis Obispo High School](/source/San_Luis_Obispo_High_School) and spent two years studying journalism. During that period, he volunteered at various radio stations and briefly hosted a program on public station [KCBX-FM](/source/KCBX-FM) titled “Political Profile,” where he interviewed such figures as [Leon Panetta](/source/Leon_Panetta), former [U.S. Secretary of Defense](/source/United_States_Secretary_of_Defense), who at that time was the congressman representing [San Luis Obispo](/source/San_Luis_Obispo%2C_California).

Nolan completed his degree in Political Science at the [University of California, Davis](/source/University_of_California%2C_Davis).

== Broadcasting career ==

Nolan's first full-time broadcasting position was at [KVEC-AM](/source/KVEC-AM) radio in San Luis Obispo, where he served as the Assistant News Director. Two years later, he moved to television, first as a weekday reporter and weekend sports anchor at [KSBY-TV](/source/KSBY-TV). He later moved to [KSBW-TV](/source/KSBW-TV) in the [Salinas](/source/Salinas%2C_California)/[Monterey](/source/Monterey%2C_California) market. Among the stories he covered was actor [Clint Eastwood](/source/Clint_Eastwood)'s campaign for mayor of [Carmel, California](/source/Carmel%2C_California).

In July 1986, Nolan was hired by [KNBC-TV](/source/KNBC-TV) News Director Tom Capra, the former executive producer of [''The Today Show''](/source/Today_(American_TV_program)) and son of film director [Frank Capra](/source/Frank_Capra). Over the course of his career, he has covered numerous fires, floods, earthquakes, police chases and riots. In 1989, he reported live for [NBC News](/source/NBC_News) from [Candlestick Park](/source/Candlestick_Park) moments after the 7.2 magnitude [Loma Prieta earthquake](/source/Loma_Prieta_earthquake) (he had been on vacation attending the sporting event at the stadium). In 1992, he broke the investigation into singer/entertainer [Michael Jackson](/source/Michael_Jackson) by the [Los Angeles Police Department](/source/Los_Angeles_Police_Department). In 1994, reported live during the police pursuit while driving in front of [O. J. Simpson](/source/O._J._Simpson)’s white [Ford Bronco](/source/Ford_Bronco).

Nolan also reported from [Iraq](/source/Iraq) during [Operation Iraqi Freedom](/source/Operation_Iraqi_Freedom); [Pakistan](/source/Pakistan) during the war in [Afghanistan](/source/Afghanistan); [Lebanon](/source/Lebanon) during the anniversary of the [September 11 attacks](/source/September_11_attacks); and in [Kobe](/source/Kobe) and [Tokyo](/source/Tokyo), [Japan](/source/Japan) following two massive earthquakes in [1995](/source/Great_Hanshin_earthquake) and [2011](/source/2011_T%C5%8Dhoku_earthquake_and_tsunami), respectively. He has also reported from [Rome](/source/Rome), [Tel Aviv](/source/Tel_Aviv), [Mexico City](/source/Mexico_City) and the small island of [Tuvalu](/source/Tuvalu) in the South Pacific. In January 2025, he reported on-site during the Los Angeles wildfire event.

Nolan was selected in 2010 as the television “Journalist of the Year” for the Los Angeles chapter of the [Society of Professional Journalists](/source/Society_of_Professional_Journalists).

He has a [Golden Mike Award](/source/Golden_Mike_Award) for a story chronicling the plight of Afghan refugee children along the Pakistani frontier and has a regional [Emmy Award](/source/Emmy_Award) for a series on the small South Pacific island of [Tuvalu](/source/Tuvalu) in its struggle against global warming.
