**Compsa** (modern [Conza della Campania](/source/Conza_della_Campania)) was an ancient city of the [Hirpini](/source/Hirpini), near the sources of the [Aufidus](/source/Aufidus), on the boundary of [Lucania](/source/Lucania) and not far from that of [Apulia](/source/Apulia), on a ridge 609 m above sea level.[1] It was betrayed to [Hannibal](/source/Hannibal) in 216 BC after the defeat of [Cannae](/source/Cannae), but recaptured two years later. It was probably occupied by [Sulla](/source/Sulla) in 89 BC, and was the scene of the death of [Titus Annius Milo](/source/Titus_Annius_Milo) in 48 BC.[2][3]

Most modern sources, for example Hülsen in Pauly-Wissowa's *Realencyclopädie* (Stuttgart, 1901, iv. 797), refer [Caesar](/source/Julius_Caesar)'s *[Commentarii de Bello Civili](/source/Commentarii_de_Bello_Civili)* (iii. 22) and [Pliny](/source/Pliny_the_Elder)'s [*Naturalis Historiæ*](/source/Natural_History_(Pliny))[4] to this place, supposing the ancient manuscripts to be corrupt. Thus the usual identification of the site of Milo's death with [Cassano allo Ionio](/source/Cassano_allo_Ionio) on the [Gulf of Taranto](/source/Gulf_of_Taranto) must be incorrect.[2]

In imperial times, as inscriptions show, it was a *[municipium](/source/Municipium)*, but it lay far from any of the main highways.[2] The ruins of the ancient city were studied again, when they reappeared after the destruction of the modern town in the [1980 Irpinia earthquake](/source/1980_Irpinia_earthquake).[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]
