==Design and development==
In 2002 the co-owners of Aerocomp, which is now known as Comp Air, Steve Young and Ron Lueck announced the Comp Air Jet project. The jet is constructed from a "proprietary carbon-fiber hybrid sandwich" and powered by a Ukrainian [Ivchenko AI-25](/source/Ivchenko_AI-25) engine. Alternative engines planned for included the [Pratt & Whitney JT12-8](/source/Pratt_%26_Whitney_JT12) or [CJ610](/source/General_Electric_CJ610) or projected future [Williams International](/source/Williams_International) or Agilis engines.<ref name="JetPR">{{Cite web|url = http://www.aerocompinc.com/airplanes/CA-Jet/jet_press_release.htm|title = Comp Air Jet Press Releases|accessdate = 25 April 2011|last = [Comp Air](/source/Comp_Air)|authorlink = |date = January 2005|archive-date = July 7, 2011|archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20110707092104/http://www.aerocompinc.com/airplanes/CA-Jet/jet_press_release.htm|url-status = dead}}</ref>

On July 10, 2004 the Comp Air Jet flew for the first time from [Merritt Island Airport](/source/Merritt_Island_Airport). Though the gear was not retracted during the flight, the aircraft still reached speeds of {{convert|157|kn|km/h|0|abbr=on}}. The jet landed after 37 minutes with the landing taking about 2000 feet.<ref name="JetPR" />

On January 11, 2005 Aerocomp flew the prototype back to the Merritt Island Airport for further development work after more than 30 hours of flight testing at [Space Coast Regional Airport](/source/Space_Coast_Regional_Airport), [Titusville, Florida](/source/Titusville%2C_Florida).<ref name="JetPR" />

== Operational history==
As of April 2011 the prototype remained the sole example registered with the [Federal Aviation Administration](/source/Federal_Aviation_Administration).<ref name="FAAReg">{{Cite web|url = http://registry.faa.gov/aircraftinquiry/AcftRef_Results.aspx?Mfrtxt=&Modeltxt=COMP+AIR+JET&PageNo=1|title = Make / Model Inquiry Results|accessdate = 25 April 2011|last = [Federal Aviation Administration](/source/Federal_Aviation_Administration)|authorlink = |date = April 2011|archive-date = June 16, 2012|archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20120616124743/http://registry.faa.gov/aircraftinquiry/AcftRef_Results.aspx?Mfrtxt=&Modeltxt=COMP%20AIR%20JET&PageNo=1|url-status = dead}}</ref>
