The '''Committee of Estates''' governed Scotland during the [Wars of the Three Kingdoms](/source/Wars_of_the_Three_Kingdoms) (1638–1651) when the [Parliament of Scotland](/source/Parliament_of_Scotland) was not sitting. It was dominated by [Covenanter](/source/Covenanter)s of which the most influential faction was that of the [Earl of Argyll](/source/Archibald_Campbell%2C_1st_Marquess_of_Argyll).<ref>David Plant. The Committee derives its name from the "Estates of Scotland" which was an alternative name for the Parliament of Scotland (see the [Three Estates of Scotland](/source/Three_Estates_of_Scotland)).
