# Comite River

The **Comite River** /koʊ.mit/ (French: *Rivière Comité*) is a right-bank tributary of the [Amite River](/source/Amite_River), with a confluence near the city of [Denham Springs](/source/Denham_Springs), east of [Baton Rouge, Louisiana](/source/Baton_Rouge,_Louisiana). The river is 56.1 miles (90.3 km) long.[1] Its [drainage basin](/source/Drainage_basin) comprises about 348 square miles (900 km2), and includes portions of [Wilkinson](/source/Wilkinson_County,_Mississippi) and [Amite](/source/Amite_County,_Mississippi) Counties in Mississippi, and [East Feliciana](/source/East_Feliciana_Parish,_Louisiana) and [East Baton Rouge](/source/East_Baton_Rouge_Parish,_Louisiana) Parishes in Louisiana.[2] The river's source lies in the hills of the East and [West Feliciana](/source/West_Feliciana_Parish,_Louisiana) Parishes, and empties into the Amite River just north of [U.S. Route 190](/source/U.S._Route_190) (Florida Blvd) near the eastern boundary of Baton Rouge.

## Flooding

Following heavy rainfall, the water drains into the river. During flood events, homes in outlying areas east of Baton Rouge can become flooded. The flood of record saw floodwaters cover [Greenwell Springs](/source/Greenwell_Springs,_Louisiana) Road.[citation needed]
