**Colours** is a [patience or card solitaire](/source/Patience_or_card_solitaire) game which is played using a single pack of [playing cards](/source/Playing_card). It is in the same family as [Sir Tommy](/source/Sir_Tommy), [Strategy](/source/Strategy_(solitaire)), and [Calculation](/source/Calculation_(solitaire)).

Colours is so called because of its emphasis on colour. The game is a variation of **Lady Betty**.

## Rules

The cards are [shuffled](/source/Shuffled), then [dealt](/source/Dealt_(patience_term)) out one by one onto the [foundations](/source/Foundations_(patience_term)) or onto one of six [waste piles](/source/Waste_pile), the [top cards](/source/Top_card) of which are [available](/source/Available_(patience_term)) for [building](/source/Building_(patience_term)) *only* on the foundations.

A two, a three, a four, and a five are needed to start the foundations. The [deuce](/source/Deuce_(playing_card)) and the four should be of one [colour](/source/Colour_(patience_term)) (regardless of [suit](/source/Suit_(patience_term))) and the [trey](/source/Trey_(playing_card)) and the five be of the other colour. Naturally, the colour of the first [foundation card](/source/Foundation_card) that turns up during dealing dictates the colours of the other cards. The foundations are [built up](/source/Built_up) by colour.

Dealing of cards from the [stock](/source/Stock_(patience_term)) continues until the stock runs out. The game is [out](/source/Out_(patience_term)) when all of the cards are built onto the foundations, which should have an ace, a deuce, a trey, and a four on top.

## Variations

**Lady Betty** is more like [Sir Tommy](/source/Sir_Tommy) in that it requires you to build the foundations by suit rather than colour, but like Colours it gives two extra [tableau](/source/Tableau_(patience_term)) [piles](/source/Piles_(patience_term)) to work with.
