It was described by [Auguste Forel](/source/Auguste_Forel) in 1899.<ref>{{cite journal|last1=Forel|first1=A.|title=Formicidae.|journal=Biologia Centrali-Americana|date=1899|page=(page 158, queen described)}}</ref>

Based on specimen collections, ''C. abditus'' ants are found in [montane rainforest edge](/source/Montane_ecology) habitats, at elevations of 1,140 metres (3,740&nbsp;ft).<ref>{{cite web |author1=AntWeb |title=Species: ''Colobopsis abdita'' |url=https://www.antweb.org/description.do?genus=colobopsis&species=abdita&rank=species |publisher=The California Academy of Sciences |accessdate=31 December 2018}}</ref> This species is rather small. Workers are normally 3.5 – 4&nbsp;mm in length, soldiers at 5 – 6&nbsp;mm, males at 4 - 4.5&nbsp;mm, and the queens are 7.5&nbsp;mm, making them the largest of the colony.<ref>Wheeler, W. M. 1934g.
