His first candidacy was at the [1948 general election](/source/1948_Irish_general_election), where he was unsuccessful, winning just 3.3% of the first-preference votes and losing his deposit. At the [1951 general election](/source/1951_Irish_general_election), he tripled his share of the vote and won a second seat for Fianna Fáil in the three-seat constituency.<ref name=elecs_irl>{{cite web|url=http://electionsireland.org/candidate.cfm?ID=2239|title=Colm Gallagher|work=ElectionsIreland.org|access-date=23 August 2012}}</ref>

He lost his seat at the [1954 general election](/source/1954_Irish_general_election) to the [Labour Party](/source/Labour_Party_(Ireland))'s [Maureen O'Carroll](/source/Maureen_O'Carroll), but defeated her at the [1957 general election](/source/1957_Irish_general_election).
