It is native to [California](/source/California) and adjacent sections of [Oregon](/source/Oregon) and [Nevada](/source/Nevada), where it grows in the [coniferous forests](/source/temperate_coniferous_forest) of several mountain ranges, including the [Sierra Nevada](/source/Sierra_Nevada_(U.S.)).

This is an [annual](/source/Annual_plant) [herb](/source/Herbaceous_plant) producing a slender, reddish stem up to about 25 centimeters tall. The [inflorescence](/source/inflorescence) is a densely glandular array of flowers arising on [pedicels](/source/Pedicel_(botany)). The [corolla](/source/corolla_(botany)) is no more than a centimeter long and two white or lavender-tinted upper lobes and three darker lavender to purple lower lobes.
