# Colligan River

The **Colligan River** (Irish: *Abhainn Choilligeáin*[2]) is a fast-flowing river in [Ireland](/source/Ireland), flowing through [County Waterford](/source/County_Waterford).[3][4] It is reputed to be one of the fastest in Europe.[5][6]

## Course

The Colligan River rises in the [Monavullagh Mountains](/source/Monavullagh_Mountains), flows southwards under the Scart Bridge, passes under the [N72](/source/N72_road_(Ireland)) at [Kildangan](/source/Kildangan), and then turns eastwards into a wide estuary at [Dungarvan](/source/Dungarvan). It is bridged by the [N25](/source/N25_road_(Ireland)) (The Bypass) and [R911](/source/R911_road_(Ireland)) (The Causeway) before entering the [Celtic Sea](/source/Celtic_Sea).

## Recreation

The Colligan River is a noted [salmon](/source/Atlantic_salmon) and [trout](/source/Brown_trout) fishery.[7][8] It is also used for [whitewater kayaking](/source/Whitewater_slalom).[9]

## Parish

Colligan gives its name to a [civil parish](/source/Civil_parish_(Ireland)) northeast of [Dungarvan](/source/Dungarvan) in the barony of [Decies-without-Drum](/source/Decies-without-Drum).[10] There was formerly a roughly coterminous Catholic parish in the [Diocese of Waterford and Lismore](/source/Diocese_of_Waterford_and_Lismore_(Roman_Catholic)),[11] which gave its name to [Colligan–Emmets GAA](/source/Colligan%E2%80%93Emmets_GAA) club. The Catholic parish was later merged with [Kilgobinet](/source/Kilgobnet) parish.[12]
