While playing for [Upper Canada College](/source/Upper_Canada_College) in [Toronto](/source/Toronto), [Ontario](/source/Ontario), Greening was selected by the Ottawa Senators in the seventh round, 204th overall, of the [2005 NHL entry draft](/source/2005_NHL_entry_draft). After graduating from Cornell in 2010, Greening joined the [Binghamton Senators](/source/Binghamton_Senators) of the [American Hockey League](/source/American_Hockey_League) (AHL), the top minor league affiliate of the Ottawa Senators. He made his NHL debut on February 1, 2011, in a game in [Newark](/source/Newark%2C_New_Jersey) against the [New Jersey Devils](/source/New_Jersey_Devils). On March 3, 2011, Greening scored his first career NHL goal against the [Atlanta Thrashers](/source/Atlanta_Thrashers) in a 3–1 Ottawa victory. During the [2012–13 NHL lockout](/source/2012%E2%80%9313_NHL_lockout), Greening spent time with the [Aalborg Pirates](/source/Aalborg_Pirates) of [Denmark](/source/Denmark)'s [AL-Bank Ligaen](/source/AL-Bank_Ligaen).
