Fickes was born and raised in [Raleigh, North Carolina](/source/Raleigh%2C_North_Carolina). He attended [Broughton High School](/source/Broughton_High_School_(North_Carolina)), where he was a classmate of Nick Karner and actress [Aubrey Dollar](/source/Aubrey_Dollar).

He is best known as high school teenager [Jimmy Edwards](/source/James_Edwards_(character)) on the hit series ''[One Tree Hill](/source/One_Tree_Hill_(TV_series))''.
