{{Short description|Abscess lacking signs of inflammation}}
'''Cold abscess''' refers to an [abscess](/source/abscess) that lacks the intense inflammation usually associated with infection. This may be associated with infections due to bacteria like ''[Mycobacterium tuberculosis](/source/Mycobacterium_tuberculosis)'', the cause of  [tuberculosis](/source/tuberculosis),<ref name= "Garg2011">{{cite journal |last1= Garg |first1= RK |last2= Somvanshi |first2= DS |title= Spinal tuberculosis: A review |journal= The Journal of Spinal Cord Medicine |year= 2011 |volume= 34 |issue= 5 |pages= 440–54 |pmid= 22118251 |doi=10.1179/2045772311Y.0000000023 |pmc=3184481}}</ref> and fungi like those from the genus ''Blastomyces'', which cause [blastomycosis](/source/blastomycosis),<ref name=Ferri2015>{{cite book |last1= Ferri |first1= Fred |title= Ferri's Clinical Advisor |year= 2015 |publisher= [Mosby](/source/Mosby_(imprint)) ([Elsevier](/source/Elsevier)) |location= Philadelphia |isbn= 9780323083751 |chapter= Blastomycosis |pages= 198.e2–198.e4}}</ref> that do not tend to stimulate [acute inflammation](/source/acute_inflammation). Alternatively, cold abscesses are typical in persons with [hyperimmunoglobulin E syndrome](/source/hyperimmunoglobulin_E_syndrome), even when infected with an organism like ''[Staphylococcus aureus](/source/Staphylococcus_aureus)'' that causes abscesses with inflammation in others.<ref name=Holland_2007>{{cite journal |last1= Holland |first1= SM |last2= DeLeo |first2= FR |last3= Elloumi |first3= HZ |last4= Hsu |first4= AP |last5= Uzel |first5= G |last6= Brodsky |first6= N |last7= Freeman |first7= AF |last8= Demidowich |first8= A |last9= Davis |first9= J |last10= Turner |first10= ML |last11= Anderson |first11= VL |last12= Darnell |first12= DN |last13= Welch |first13= PA |last14= Kuhns |first14= DB |last15= Frucht |first15= DM |last16= Malech |first16= HL |last17= Gallin |first17= JI |last18= Kobayashi |first18= SD |last19= Whitney |first19= AR |last20= Voyich |first20= JM |last21= Musser |first21= JM |last22= Woellner |first22= C |last23= Schäffer |first23= AA |last24= Puck |first24= JM |last25= Grimbache r|first25= B |display-authors= 4 |title= Mutations in the hyper-IgE syndrome |journal= [The New England Journal of Medicine](/source/The_New_England_Journal_of_Medicine) |date= 18 October 2007 |volume= 357 |issue= 16 |pages= 1608–19 |doi= 10.1056/NEJMoa073687 |pmid= 17881745|doi-access= free }}</ref>

Signs of acute inflammation are absent, so the abscess is not hot and red as in a typical abscess filled with [pus](/source/pus). Cold abscesses are generally painless cysts that may be [subcutaneous](/source/Tuberculous_cervical_lymphadenitis), ocular, or in deep tissue such as the spine.<ref>{{cite journal |last1= Ansari |first1= S |last2= Amanullah |first2= MF |last3= Ahmad |first3= K |last4= Rauniyar |first4= RK |title= Pott's spine: Diagnostic imaging modalities and technology advancements |journal= North American Journal of Medical Sciences |date= July 2013 |volume= 5 |issue= 7 |pages= 404–11 |pmid= 24020048 |doi=10.4103/1947-2714.115775 |pmc=3759066 |doi-access= free }}</ref><ref>{{cite journal |last1= Madge |first1= SN |last2= Prabhakaran |first2= VC |last3= Shome |first3= D |last4= Kim |first4= U |last5= Honavar |first5= S |last6= Selva |first6= D |display-authors= 4 |title= Orbital tuberculosis: A review of the literature |journal= Orbit |location= Amsterdam, Netherlands |date= 2008 |volume= 27 |issue= 4 |pages= 267–77 |pmid= 18716964 |doi=10.1080/01676830802225152|s2cid= 22033701 }}</ref>
