# Cold Spring Mountain

**Cold Spring Mountain** is a summit in [Moffat County, Colorado](/source/Moffat_County,_Colorado). It was also known as O-WI-YU-KUTS Plateau. It is on the [United States Geological Survey](/source/United_States_Geological_Survey) (USGS) topographic maps of Sparks, Beaver Basin, Willow Creek Butte, Big Joe Basin, and [Irish Canyon](/source/Irish_Canyon_Natural_Area).[1]

## West Cold Spring Wilderness Study Area

In 1980, the West Cold Spring Wilderness Study Area was established by the [Bureau of Land Management](/source/Bureau_of_Land_Management) (BLM).[2] It includes 3,200 acres in [Daggett County, Utah](/source/Daggett_County,_Utah) and 18,036 acres in [Moffat County, Colorado](/source/Moffat_County,_Colorado). It is about 65 miles northwest of [Maybell](/source/Maybell,_Colorado) and 95 miles northwest of [Craig, Colorado](/source/Craig,_Colorado). Little Snake is the designated BLM field office. Backpacking, hiking, fishing, camping and hunting are activities to be enjoyed at West Cold Spring.[2]

It is on the western portion of the south-facing slopes and deep draws and canyons through the O-Wi-Yu-Kuts Plateau, and forming ridges and plateaus on the northern side of the [Green River](/source/Green_River_(Colorado_River_tributary)) valley. The elevation range is from ~5,749 to ~8,212 feet. There is a range of [riparian vegetation](/source/Riparian_zone) along Beaver Creek Canyon and Spitzie Draw, including [sagebrush steppe](/source/Sagebrush_steppe), [saltbush](/source/Saltbush), [aspen](/source/Aspen), [pine](/source/Pine), and [oak scrub](/source/Scrub_oak). There are various songbirds and snakes. [Black bear](/source/American_black_bear), [mountain lion](/source/Mountain_lion), [mule deer](/source/Mule_deer), [beaver](/source/Beaver), [elk](/source/Elk), [fox](/source/Fox), and [coyote](/source/Coyote) are among the [fauna](/source/Fauna) of the area. Beaver Creek has trout.[2]

## History

Cowboy and outlaw [Isom Dart](/source/Isom_Dart) lived near the top of the mountain, close to his horse ranch and [Browns Park](/source/Browns_Park). He was killed there in 1900 by [Tom Horn](/source/Tom_Horn), a stock investigator and former [Pinkerton detective](/source/Pinkerton_(detective_agency)).[3][4]
