# Col Fisher

**Colin Murray "Col" Fisher**, [OAM](/source/Order_of_Australia) (23 January 1923 – 7 July 2003) was an Australian politician. He was the [National Party](/source/National_Party_of_Australia_%E2%80%93_NSW) member for [Upper Hunter](/source/Electoral_district_of_Upper_Hunter) in the [New South Wales Legislative Assembly](/source/New_South_Wales_Legislative_Assembly) from 1970 to 1988, and held ministerial positions from 1975 to 1976.

Fisher was born in [Leura](/source/Leura,_New_South_Wales), the son of dairy farmer Leslie Fisher and his wife Florence Lipscomb. He was educated at [Seaham](/source/Seaham,_New_South_Wales) Public School, [Sydney Church of England Grammar School](/source/Sydney_Church_of_England_Grammar_School) and [Hawkesbury Agricultural College](/source/Hawkesbury_Agricultural_College) before running a beef and dairy farm at [Jerrys Plains](/source/Jerrys_Plains,_New_South_Wales). In 1942 he enlisted in the [AIF](/source/Second_Australian_Imperial_Force) and served in [New Guinea](/source/New_Guinea), [Borneo](/source/Borneo) and [Celebes](/source/Sulawesi), rising to the rank of captain. He left the armed forces in 1946. On 6 January 1949, Fisher married Adrienne Goldring, with whom he had two children.[1]

In 1956, Fisher was elected to Patrick's Plains Shire Council. He served on the council until 1970, when the [Country Party](/source/National_Party_of_Australia_%E2%80%93_NSW) member for the state seat of [Upper Hunter](/source/Electoral_district_of_Upper_Hunter), [Frank O'Keefe](/source/Frank_O'Keefe), resigned to contest the [Australian House of Representatives](/source/Australian_House_of_Representatives) seat of [Paterson](/source/Division_of_Paterson). Fisher was selected as the Country candidate for the by-election, and narrowly defeated [Labor](/source/Australian_Labor_Party_(New_South_Wales_Branch)) candidate [Roger Nott](/source/Roger_Nott) in a three-cornered contest. In 1975, he was appointed Minister for Local Government; he was transferred to Lands and Forests early in 1976. He lost his position when Labor won power at the [1976 state election](/source/1976_New_South_Wales_state_election). Fisher continued in the shadow ministry until 1986, and retired from politics in 1988.[2]

Fisher died in [Singleton](/source/Singleton,_New_South_Wales) in 2003.[1]
