The group was founded in 1994 by vocalists and multi-instrumentalists [Lisa Young](/source/Lisa_Young_Quartet) (voice, percussion) and Sue Johnson (voice, percussion), with Nicola Eveleigh (voice, percussion, flute), Jaqueline Gawler (voice, percussion), and Gabrielle MacGregor (voice, percussion).<ref name=pertout>{{harvnb|Young|1999}}</ref> The group's sound is influenced by [jazz](/source/jazz), [blues](/source/blues), [classical](/source/Classical_music), [African](/source/Music_of_Africa) and [Carnatic](/source/Carnatic_music) traditions, and has been compared to artists such as [Sweet Honey in the Rock](/source/Sweet_Honey_in_the_Rock) and [Bobby McFerrin](/source/Bobby_McFerrin).<ref name=hindu>{{harvnb|Alexander|2013}}</ref>

In 2003, Coco's Lunch won the award for "Best Folk/World Song" at the [Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards](/source/Contemporary_A_Cappella_Society) for "Thulele Mama Ya", from the album ''A Whole New Way of Getting Dressed'', which in turn was runner-up for the "Best Folk/World Album" category.<ref name=cara>{{harvnb|Contemporary A Cappella Society|2003}}</ref> In the same year, their song "All the Wild Wonders", written by Sue Johnson in collaboration with author [Elizabeth Honey](/source/Elizabeth_Honey), was nominated for the category "Most Performed Jazz Work" in the [APRA Music Awards of 2003](/source/APRA_Music_Awards_of_2003).<ref name=apra>{{harvnb|APRA|2003}}</ref>
