It was created in 1921 from parts of [Algoma](/source/Algoma_District), [Timiskaming](/source/Timiskaming_District) and [Thunder Bay](/source/Thunder_Bay_District,_Ontario) districts. In 2021, the district's population was 77,963, with a land area of 141,268.51 km2 (54,544.08 sq mi),[1] making it slightly smaller than the US state of [Michigan](/source/Michigan) and the second largest district in Ontario after [Kenora District](/source/Kenora_District). The district seat is [Cochrane](/source/Cochrane,_Ontario).
