The **Clyde Hotel** is a historic hotel located in the [downtown area](/source/Downtown_Portland) of [Portland](/source/Portland,_Oregon), [Oregon](/source/Oregon), [United States](/source/United_States) that first opened in 1912.[3] It was renamed the *Ben Stark Hotel* in 1987, then became the *Ace Hotel* when it joined the [Ace Hotel group](/source/Ace_Hotel) in 2005.[4] In June 2024 building ownership left the Ace Hotel group to partner with fellow hospitality company Kasa[3] and renamed the hotel *The Clyde Hotel Portland by Kasa*, restoring the hotel’s original name.[5]

## Haunted History

First opening as the Clyde Boarding House in 1912, it largely catered to traveling merchants and tradesmen. The site is known for its historic architecture, largely unchanged since it's initial opening, the original bones of the hotel providing a lasting foundation that tells a deep history. It's basement connects to the infamous Portland tunnels and also boasts a now abandoned spooky speakeasy. Many guests report mysterious noises in the night: footsteps from empty rooms, whispering in the walls, and lights that flicker at odd intervals. Staff onsite have even reported a feeling of being watched in the lonely hours of the night, especially in the basement.

## Featured in Film and TV

The Clyde Hotel was the site of the filming for Drugstore Cowboy, directed by Gus Van Sant and released in 1989.[6]

While the Hotel was The Ace, it was referenced in a Portlandia sketch making a parody of downtown Portland Hotels, dubbing it "The Deuce" in episode 5 of season 1.

## National Register

The building was added to the [National Register of Historic Places](/source/National_Register_of_Historic_Places) in 1994.[2]
