Club Asylum Also known as The Asylum, Asylum Origin England Genres UK garage Years active 1990s–present Members Jeremy Sylvester Past members Paul Emanuel

**Club Asylum** is the name of [UK garage](/source/UK_garage) musician Jeremy Sylvester. They were originally a [duo](/source/Electronic_music_duo) which consisted of Sylvester and Paul Emanuel. After the duo decided to go their separate ways, Sylvester continued to produce and remix under the Club Asylum moniker as a solo artist, and is still active to the present day.[1]

## Biography

Sylvester and Emanuel first met during the early days of the [UK garage](/source/UK_garage) scene at the London-based house and garage [label](/source/Record_label) Nice 'N' Ripe.[1]

The duo scored their first chart entry in 1998 with "Freek Me Up", a [bootleg](/source/Bootleg_recording) vinyl release of the [Jodeci](/source/Jodeci) song "[Freek'n You](/source/Freek'n_You)", which reached No. 92 on the [UK Singles Chart](/source/UK_Singles_Chart).[2] This sparked interest from major labels such as [Universal](/source/Universal_Music_Group)/[EMI](/source/EMI_Records), [Virgin](/source/Virgin_Records), [PolyGram](/source/PolyGram) and [Strictly Rhythm](/source/Strictly_Rhythm).[1] Their UK garage remixes of songs would prove popular in the scene, with official garage re-releases charting in the UK, including [K-Ci & JoJo](/source/K-Ci_%26_JoJo)'s "[Tell Me It's Real](/source/Tell_Me_It's_Real)" charting at No. 16 on the official singles chart[3] and No. 4 on the [UK Dance Singles Chart](/source/UK_Dance_Singles_Chart)[4] and [Kristine Blond](/source/Kristine_Blond)'s "[Love Shy](/source/Love_Shy_(song))" at No. 28[5] and No. 3 on the dance chart.[6] Other popular remixes include "[Imagine](/source/Imagine_(Shola_Ama_song))" and "Run to Me" by [Shola Ama](/source/Shola_Ama) and "Sweeter Than Wine" by [Dionne Rakeem](/source/Dionne_Rakeem). "Imagine" was a No. 1 dance hit in 2000[7] and was included in *[NME](/source/NME)'*s "25 essential UK garage anthems" list.[8] [Capital Xtra](/source/Capital_Xtra) included "Run to Me" in their list of "The Best Old-School Garage Anthems of All Time".[9] "Sweeter Than Wine" reached No. 46 on the UK Singles Chart[10] and No. 2 on the UK Dance Singles Chart in 2001.[11]

Club Asylum have remixed notable songs including [Another Level](/source/Another_Level_(group))'s "[Freak Me](/source/Freak_Me#Another_Level_version)", [All Saints](/source/All_Saints_(group))' "[Bootie Call](/source/Bootie_Call)", [Lutricia McNeal](/source/Lutricia_McNeal)'s "[Someone Loves You Honey](/source/Someone_Loves_You_Honey#Lutricia_McNeal_version)", [Barbara Tucker](/source/Barbara_Tucker)'s "[Everybody Dance](/source/Everybody_Dance_(The_Horn_Song))" (all from 1998) and [Ginuwine](/source/Ginuwine)'s "[What's So Different?](/source/What's_So_Different%3F)" (1999).

Outside of Club Asylum, Jeremy Sylvester has produced, remixed and released material under many other aliases and as part of other groups/collaborations, including X-Factor 7 with [DJ Disciple](/source/DJ_Disciple) and Tuff Asylum with [Karl 'Tuff Enuff' Brown](/source/Karl_'Tuff_Enuff'_Brown).

In 2013, Sylvester appeared alongside many other garage pioneers in a documentary exploring the legacy of UK garage, *Rewind 4Ever: The History of UK Garage*.[12]
