# Close House Mine

**Close House Mine** is a [Site of Special Scientific Interest](/source/Site_of_Special_Scientific_Interest) in the [Teesdale](/source/Teesdale_(district)) district of west [County Durham](/source/County_Durham), [England](/source/England). It is a disused [opencast mine](/source/Opencast_mine) located in [Arngill Beck](/source/Arngill_Beck) on the north-east flank of Close House Crags, in the [Lunedale Forest](/source/Lunedale_Forest). The site is surrounded on three sides by the [Upper Teesdale](/source/Upper_Teesdale) SSSI.

The mine is situated within the [Lunedale](/source/Lunedale) [fault system](/source/Fault_(geology)), at the southern limit of the [Alston Block](/source/Alston_Block). A large [barite](/source/Barite) [ore body](/source/Mining) is exposed at the mine and a rare mineral, [rosasite](/source/Rosasite), has been identified at the site. [1] [2]
