==Education and early career==
Completing his first architectural degree at the [University of Cape Town](/source/University_of_Cape_Town) in South Africa, Wilkinson finished his professional schooling in 1980 at the [Architectural Association School of Architecture](/source/Architectural_Association_School_of_Architecture) (AA) in London, studying under [Rem Koolhaas](/source/Rem_Koolhaas) and [Zaha Hadid](/source/Zaha_Hadid). He went on to work for [Arup](/source/Arup_Group_Limited) and then [Terry Farrell](/source/Terry_Farrell_(architect)), where he became a Design Director and collaborated on such [urban renewal](/source/urban_renewal) projects as TVAM Studios and Alban Gate.{{citation needed|date=June 2013}}

In 1990, after working in Sydney, Australia for six months, Wilkinson relocated from London to Los Angeles to work briefly for [Frank Gehry](/source/Frank_Gehry) as a Project Manager on the [Disney Concert Hall](/source/Disney_Concert_Hall) and [Chiat/Day](/source/Chiat%2FDay)’s [Venice, Los Angeles](/source/Venice%2C_Los_Angeles) offices. By 1991, Wilkinson had established his own firm in Los Angeles. His first project to win international acclaim was the headquarters for the world-renowned advertising agency [TBWA\Chiat\Day](/source/TBWA%5CChiat%5CDay). Wilkinson transformed an empty warehouse in Los Angeles into an ''Advertising City'' where open offices co-exist with a basketball court and ''Main Street''.
