From May 2023 until Johnstone's death in May 2024, he was the National President of the [Royal British Legion](/source/Royal_British_Legion).

Johnstone was born on 6 September 1963 in [Kampala](/source/Kampala), Uganda. He was educated at [Shrewsbury School](/source/Shrewsbury_School), an all-boys [public school](/source/Public_school_(United_Kingdom)). Johnstone joined the [Royal Navy](/source/Royal_Navy) in 1985.<ref name=bbc/> The first ship he served on was the [fishery protection vessel](/source/Fishery_Protection_Squadron) [HMS ''Shetland''](/source/HMS_Shetland_(P298)). Later, he was the [navigator](/source/navigator) on the [minesweeper](/source/minesweeper) HMS ''Nurton''.
