The '''Clipper Mountains''' are located in the eastern [Mojave Desert](/source/Mojave_Desert) and protected within [Mojave Trails National Monument](/source/Mojave_Trails_National_Monument), in [San Bernardino County, California](/source/San_Bernardino_County%2C_California).

==Location==
The range parallels and is just south of [Interstate 40](/source/Interstate_40_in_California) and the [Clipper Valley](/source/Clipper_Valley), between the freeway and the [National Old Trails Highway](/source/National_Old_Trails_Highway) - [U.S. Route 66](/source/U.S._Route_66_in_California).

==Geography==
The Clipper Mountains are southeast of the [Granite Mountains](/source/Granite_Mountains_(eastern_San_Bernardino_County%2C_California)) and [Providence Mountains](/source/Providence_Mountains), north of the [Old Woman Mountains](/source/Old_Woman_Mountains), and west of the [Sacramento Mountains](/source/Sacramento_Mountains_(California)). The range is home to at least three natural [spring](/source/spring_(hydrosphere))s, and the 'Tom Reed Mine.'

==Clipper Mountain Wilderness==

Castle Dome, a local landmark, can be clearly seen from Historic Route 66 to the south and east.

The vegetation types are predominantly [xeric desert scrub](/source/deserts_and_xeric_shrublands), with [creosote bush](/source/Larrea_tridentata) (''Larrea tridentata''), and [desert wash scrub](/source/desert_dry_wash). In the spring, the alluvial fans turn yellow with [brittlebush](/source/Encelia_farinosa) flowers (''Encelia farinosa''), as well as wildflowers.<!--Bittlebush is a bush(a low shrub-form) with many yellow flowers, so I added "as well as wildflower"-->

Wildlife includes a herd of 40-50 [desert bighorn sheep](/source/desert_bighorn_sheep), coyote, [roadrunner](/source/roadrunner)s, chucker, [quail](/source/quail), [prairie falcon](/source/prairie_falcon)s, [red-tailed hawk](/source/red-tailed_hawk)s, [golden eagle](/source/golden_eagle)s, ground squirrels, kangaroo rats, [black-tailed jackrabbit](/source/black-tailed_jackrabbit)s, [rattlesnake](/source/rattlesnake)s, and several species of lizards.
