He turned professional in 1979 but never achieved the results that he had as an amateur. He failed to win a fight against any significant opposition, and lost decisions to [James Shuler](/source/James_Shuler), [Sumbu Kalambay](/source/Sumbu_Kalambay), and [Buster Drayton](/source/Buster_Drayton). In 1989, Jackson, a former [sheriff's deputy](/source/Sheriffs_in_the_United_States), was convicted of [kidnapping](/source/kidnapping) an [Alabama](/source/Alabama) banker in an [extortion](/source/extortion) scheme, in which he demanded [US$](/source/United_States_dollar)9,000.
