# Clinton Day

**Clinton Day** (March 17, 1847 – January 11, 1916) was an American [architect](/source/Architect), active on the [West Coast](/source/West_Coast_of_the_United_States) of the United States.[1]

## Biography

Day was born on March 17, 1847, in [Brooklyn](/source/Brooklyn), New York City; and he moved to California when eight years old. His grandfather, [Jeremiah Day](/source/Jeremiah_Day), was president of [Yale University](/source/Yale_University), and his father, [Sherman Day](/source/Sherman_Day), was surveyor-general of California and one of the founders of the [College of California](/source/College_of_California), predecessor to the [University of California, Berkeley](/source/University_of_California,_Berkeley).

Day graduated from the College of California in 1868, and received his MA degree from the same institution in 1874.[2] (He later received an honorary LLD from the college in 1910.) In 1875, he married Grace Wakefield from [Cambridge, Massachusetts](/source/Cambridge,_Massachusetts), and they had one daughter.[1]

As an architect, he designed some of San Francisco's finest buildings, including the [City of Paris](/source/City_of_Paris_Dry_Goods_Co.) building, Union Trust building, and [Gump's](/source/Gump's) department store; and a number of fine houses in [Oakland, California](/source/Oakland,_California), including the [Treadwell Mansion](/source/Treadwell_Mansion). He designed Architecture Building and Metallurgical Laboratory at the [University of California, Berkeley](/source/University_of_California,_Berkeley).[3] He was a [Fellow of the American Institute of Architects](/source/Fellow_of_the_American_Institute_of_Architects). Clinton was the great-grandson of American founding father [Roger Sherman](/source/Roger_Sherman).
