He served as the head football coach at Coffeyville Junior College—now known as [Coffeyville Community College](/source/Coffeyville_Community_College)—in [Coffeyville, Kansas](/source/Coffeyville%2C_Kansas) from 1949 to 1950. He led his [1956 Coffeyville Red Ravens football team](/source/1956_Coffeyville_Red_Ravens_football_team) to an [NJCAA National Football Championship](/source/NJCAA_National_Football_Championship).
Long attended high school in [Edna, Kansas](/source/Edna%2C_Kansas) and was a three-sport athlete at Coffeyville and [Baker University](/source/Baker_University) in [Baldwin City, Kansas](/source/Baldwin_City%2C_Kansas). During [World War II](/source/World_War_II), he coach football and [basketball](/source/basketball) at [Fort Warren](/source/Fort_D._A._Russell_(Wyoming)) in [Wyoming](/source/Wyoming).
