## History

The Cleveland Chamber Symphony was founded in 1980[2] by [composer](/source/Composer) Edwin London.[3][4] Under his direction, the ensemble performed, recorded, and commissioned contemporary orchestral works, primarily by American composers.[5]

The ensemble also performed in communities adjacent to [Cuyahoga County](/source/Cuyahoga_County) and throughout the Midwest.[6]

The CCS has commissioned and performed works by national and international composers, who have often been invited to serve as guest conductors and educators. Following a national tour, the CCS performed [Bernard Rands](/source/Bernard_Rands)' *Canti Trilogy* at [Harvard University](/source/Harvard_University).[7]

In 2007, the group won a [Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Soloist(s) Performance](/source/Grammy_Award_for_Best_Instrumental_Soloist(s)_Performance_(with_orchestra)) for its recording of [Olivier Messiaen](/source/Olivier_Messiaen)'s *[Oiseaux exotiques](/source/Oiseaux_exotiques),* conducted by [John McLaughlin Williams](/source/John_McLaughlin_Williams) with pianist [Angelin Chang](/source/Angelin_Chang).[8][9]
